Our mission is to develop in Workington a bus and rail based Visitors Centre and to assist in the preservation of Workington's rich transport heritage. In combination with the restoration of road and rail vehicles that have local connections, the Trust is dedicated to the preservation of all manner of records, artefacts, images, documents, memorabilia, and memories for the enjoyment by local people and benefit of future generations.

We will help promote more employment, training & opportunities for voluntary work in the town, and to celebrate the historical connections with the past and present transport industry of Workington. It is planned to create full and part-time jobs as the centre becomes fully operational. Training will play a large part in the Trust's activities allowing new skills to be learned in all aspects of renovating and maintaining historic vehicles, also in catering, retail and administration activities. Training will lead to nationally recognised qualifications.A large number of volunteers will be accommodated, either working on their own projects or on other work within the Trust. There will be a requirement for many different skills.

Environmental matters will feature strongly in areas of nature gardens, water recycling, solar energy, and encouraging visitors to use any methods but cars to visit the site!

Fundraising...

Many sources of funding for different aspects of the project have been identified. Organisations in Workington are eligible for funding from Europe, Coalfields Regeneration and Landfill Tax. The group is a partner in Workington’s Single Regeneration Budget.

With group membership of well over 60, including the corporate memberships of local businesses, our own fundraising comes in the form of proceeds from regular Toy & Model Fairs, Model Railway Exhibitions, coach trips, raffles and a sales stand.
